Hawks/Jackets Recap

Leave it to the Blue Jackets to end a good thing. I was on a Hawks high after the weekend, and the Jackets, who seem to own the Hawks this year, come in a end their win streak, beating the Hawks 4-2. Really not a great start to their long trip as the circus literally comes to the United Center. They haven't had a winning record on the annual trip in 11 years. Uh oh.

There a couple of things to take away from this game. Once again, the defense stepped up, with Duncs adding yet another goal. He's been a pretty regular contributor lately. And as we all know, Duncs is a favorite here since he gave me his broken stick at practice last year.

Also of note is Dustin Byfuglien. His presence has been felt immediately since returning to the team. He gives the Hawks a much needed edge. He's not afraid to get in a couple fights and provide a physical aspect to the game. He added his second goal of the year in the 3rd. He is looking more and more like a keeper.

Bloghawks fav Patrick Lalime got the nod in goal, but he couldn't keep his hot streak alive. Facing only 21 shots, he made only 17 saves. Not one for the highlight reel. Perhaps he is getting overexposed. But really, the Khabi option isn't that much better. Goaltending will remain a source of frustration for the season it appears.

Really just not a great game, and definitely one that they should have won. This road trip will be a big test of maturity for the team. Frankly, leaving this road trip even will be considered a victory.

And finally a little Marty Havlat update. It appears he will be out for the remainder of the week, but he is traveling on the road trip. It will really be interesting to see how the lines will be re-juggled to fit him in. Either way, his presence will send shockwaves though the Hawks offense, which has already been a strength for them this year. The power play should only get better, which is a very reassuring thought.

Tonight they Hawks have Nashville, followed by the Lightning, Coyotes, and Canucks, all very, very winnable games. Really just about the best match ups you could conceivably wish for the Hawks on their trip. But this trip has always been tough. Stay positive.
